Jam on cream? Cream on jam? The great scone debate

28th June 2021
Having originated in Scotland, us Briton’s have been dining on scones since the early 1500’s.

However, scones didn’t become popular until the early 1800’s, when the concept of afternoon tea first took off, initially introduced by Anna the seventh Duchess of Bedford.

Now a centrepiece to this British tradition, whether it’s cream tea or afternoon tea you prefer, neither is complete without a delicious scone, but the age-old debate continues…

Jam or cream first?

Who better to settle the debate than Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II. It’s reported that the Queen actually prefers homemade Balmoral jam first on her scones, often dining on them during royal tea parties at Buckingham Palace.

Whilst we might not have Balmoral jam for our cream teas, we do have our very own scrumptious strawberry jam, the perfect accompaniment for Rodda’s Cornish Clotted Cream.

Whichever way you favour your cream tea, we don’t judge, tell us how you have yours.
